Nancy Cross is a consultant with Mereweg, bringing together a scientific background and five years of consulting experience.
A scientist’s training
Nancy earned a first-class degree in Biochemistry from the University of Manchester, including a year at the Centre for Molecular Bacteriology and Infection (now the CBRB) at Imperial College London. After several years in the life sciences industry, she completed an Erasmus Mundus MSc in Marine Environment and Resources, a programme focused on integrated research and policy for the ocean.
She graduated with honours and received the Calypso Prize for the best MSc thesis in Marine Environmental Conservation, awarded by the Cousteau Foundation.
Research on climate-smart planning
Her most recent research, hosted by the HELCOM Secretariat and published in npj Ocean Sustainability, explored climate-smart marine spatial planning to advance biodiversity conservation and climate resilience. Read our explainer on climate-smart marine spatial planning for more on the field.
Bridging science, policy and community
As an early-career ocean professional, Nancy works to connect science, policy and community through inclusive, bottom-up approaches to evidence-based decisions. She sees conservation and economic development as complementary necessities for sustainable and fair use of marine resources.
Away from her desk, Nancy is a surfer, a rescue scuba diver and a qualified AIDA 2 freediver to 20 metres.
